The Winnipeg Jets have traded wings Patrick Laine and Jack Roslovic to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Pierre-Luc Dubois and a third-round draft pick. This was a trade of three disgruntled players from two different teams. Laine and Roslovic had both requested trades out of Winnipeg in the offseason, and unless you live under a rock, you know about the problems between Dubois and Columbus.
Laine has been compared to Alex Ovechkin because of his lethal shot, but after scoring 44 goals in 82 games during the 2017-18 season, he has only managed 58 goals in his last 150 games. Still, he should provide offense for a Columbus team that is starving for it. Laine is currently on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, and although the injury is not severe, there is no word yet if he will be able to play for Columbus on Tuesday versus the Panthers.
Roslovic is a solid wing, but Laine is the prize for the Blue Jackets in this deal. The 23-year old wing had 12 goals and 29 points in 71 games last season. Roslovic rarely played on the same line with Laine in Winnipeg, and the same may hold for Columbus.
While losing Laine will hurt the Jets, adding Dubois gives them something they have needed for several seasons, a reliable second-line center. Dubois is not a superstar, and that won’t change going to Winnipeg, but he will play with more talented wingers than he had in Columbus. Dubois’s best season came in 2018-19 when he had 27 goals and 61 points in 82 games. Dubois could eventually pass the 30-goal mark in Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg Jets are currently +4600 to hoist the Stanley Cup, while the Columbus Blue Jackets are +3500.
