Williams is currently dealing with a neck injury and a concussion, so the Jets have decided to place him on injured reserve. This will officially end his season after emerging as one of the best young defensive linemen in the league. He finished with seven sacks, 55 tackles, and 10 tackles for a loss and was one of the lone bright spots for the Jets in an otherwise dismal season.
The Jets’ defense will undoubtedly take a hit without Williams, and they weren’t very good to begin with. They rank 22nd in Football Outsiders’ defensive DVOA, but that number is buoyed by the fact that they were decent against the run. It’s hard to see them maintaining their solid run defense with Williams sidelined.
The Jets pulled off one of the largest upsets of the season last week vs. the Rams, winning outright despite being listed as 17.5-point underdogs. That said, they’re still listed as 9.5-point home underdogs on FanDuel Sportsbook this week vs. the red-hot Cleveland Browns.
