Kevin Kiermaier Leaves Game Early
Just days after coming off the injured list, Kevin Kiermaier departed the Tampa Bay Rays contest against the Toronto Blue Jays. The injury is not believed to be serious, as it’s reported that Kiermaier was dealing with left eye irritation.
Kiermaier recently returned from an eight-game absence while resolving a left-wrist sprain. Brett Phillips handled center field duties with Kiermaier out and was inserted into the lineup tonight after Kiermaier left.
Phillips has been an above-average replacement relative to Kiermaier’s early-season production. Phillips has a better on-base plus slugging percentage, more runs batted in, and home runs than Kiermaier while being an adequate defensive replacement to the three-time Gold Glover.
Tampa didn’t provide a timeline for Kiermaier’s injury, but it’s not likely that eye irritation results in a long-term absence.
