Kristaps Porzingis Questionable Monday vs. Grizzlies
February 22Matt LaMarcaSportsGrid
Porzingis was added to the injury report as questionable for Monday’s matchup vs. the Grizzlies. This game is the first game of a back-to-back set for the Mavericks, so it is possible that they could just be exercising caution with him. Porzingis has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career — most notable to his knees — and he’s currently dealing with a tight lower back. Josh Richardson has also been added to the injury report but is listed as positive.
Porzingis has played in 17 of 19 games since making his debut this season, and his absence would allow Dwight Powell and Willie Cauley-Stein to play more minutes at center. Cauley-Stein has been serving as the backup center recently — Powell was a DNP-CD in their last game — and he’s also been more effective on a per-minute basis with Porzingis out of the lineup. He would be the clear preferred target of the two.
Tim Hardaway Jr. could also pick up a few additional minutes. He’s come off the bench in each of his past eight games, and he’s averaged just 26.2 minutes over his past six contests. Hardaway has increased his usage rate by +2.2% in games without Porzingis this season, so he would be an interesting value play on FanDuel.
The Mavericks are currently listed as five-point favorites vs. the Grizzlies on FanDuel Sportsbook but expect that line to drop if Porzingis is officially ruled out.
