We didn’t have to wait long for the first bench-clearing situation of the baseball season. The Reds and Cardinals got face-to-face on Saturday, and Castellanos was at the heart of the situation. He aggressively flexed on pitcher Jake Woodford after sliding into home plate, likely in retaliation for Woodruff hitting Castellanos with a pitch earlier in the inning. Cardinals’ catcher Yadier Molina took offense to Castellanos’ actions — which isn’t surprising — but the situation luckily didn’t develop into an altercation.
Still, Castellanos was handed a two-game suspension from the MLB. He was the only player to be disciplined, and his suspension was scheduled to start on Monday. That said, he will appeal the decision, which means he should be in the lineup vs. the Pirates. Castellanos is off to an excellent start this season, posting a .545 batting average with two home runs through his first three games.
