The Jets are going to be one of the most interesting teams during the NFL offseason. Not only do they have a ton of cap space, but they can also go in a few different directions at the quarterback position. They own the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, and they are doing their due diligence on the top quarterback prospects like Justin Fields and Zach Wilson. The Jets are also rumored to be one of the preferred destinations for the disgruntled DeShaun Watson, and the Jets have more than enough draft capital to acquire him should he become available.
All of this leaves Darnold in limbo at the moment. If the Jets draft a quarterback or trade Watson, Darnold would obviously become expendable. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that there is “real interest” in Darnold from the rest of the league, and the Jets could secure even more draft picks by dealing him. That said, Rapoport adds that the Jets want to complete their evaluations on the top draft quarterbacks — including interviews and pro days — before making their decision. It seems unlikely that Darnold will be back in New York next season, but don’t expect a resolution to come quickly.
