Ronald Jones Might Play in Week 15 Despite Broken Finger
December 16Matt LaMarcaSportsGrid
Jones had pins inserted in his broken pinky on Tuesday, and head coach Bruce Arians said that he expects Jones to practice later in the week. If he’s able to practice, it seems like a given that he’ll suit up vs. the Falcons on Sunday. However, Chris Godwin picked up a similar injury earlier this season, and he was forced to miss one game.
If Jones is out, expect Leonard Fournette to return to the lineup and serve as the lead back. He was a healthy scratch last week, but he is better suited to carry the running back workload than LeSean McCoy and Ke’Shawn Vaughn. That said, Fournette has not been nearly as effective as Jones this season, averaging approximately 1.1 fewer yards per carry.
Whoever starts at running back will draw a tougher matchup than expected vs. the Falcons. They have the reputation of being a poor defensive team, but they actually rank fourth in Football Outsiders’ rush defense DVOA. It’s a much better matchup for Tom Brady and the passing game, so they could be the biggest beneficiaries if Jones is unable to suit up.
The Bucs are currently listed as six-point road favorites vs. the Falcons on FanDuel Sportsbook.
