Tough break for James Paxton and the Seattle Mariners as Jon Heyman reports that Tommy John surgery has been recommended for the veteran left-hander.
Paxton was removed from his first start of the season after facing five batters; he appeared to be in pain after throwing a fastball in the second inning. Paxton was a top of the rotation arm for the M’s but will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with an eye on returning at some point during the 2022 season.
The Mariners entered the season with a six-man rotation and will now rely on Nick Margevicius to replace some of Paxton’s innings. Margevicius has allowed four runs through two starts, and 4.2 innings pitched.
2021 was expected to be a development year for the Mariners; whatever hopes they had of competing in the AL West are gone now that Paxton will miss the rest of the season. Seattle is +9000 to win the World Series at +3000 to win the AL West at FanDuel Sportsbook.
