Did you know that playing fantasy sports for money in Iowa could get you ten years in jail?
The Iowa Code states that a person shall not "participate in a game for any sum of money or other property of any value," with exceptions only existing for bingo and horse racing. This means that DraftKings, FanDuel and all daily fantasy sites are banned in the state, and that even if you play in a league with friends for a small amount of money, you could be arrested.
What's being done to legalize fantasy sports? Is the ban being enforced? And who is actually against people playing fantasy sports for money? We found all of this out and more over a couple of days in Iowa. We sent Tim Gilbert to the Hawkeye State to find out just what the hell is going on!
Thank you to Senator Jeff Danielson, Commander Jason Tuttle of the Ames, Iowa Police Department and Representative Dan Kelley for speaking with us.
