I Wouldn’t Advise Watching This Video Of Anderson Silva Breaking His Leg At UFC 168
UFC president Dana White called it the worst injury in UFC history, and when you break both you fibula and your tibia in the same instant, it's hard to argue. Anderson Silva underwent emergency surgery on Saturday night and his career appears to be over after breaking his own left shin while delivering a kick at UFC 168 on Saturday night vs. Chris Weidman.
Seriously, don't watch this if you're the least bit squeamish.
The former UFC middleweight champion was rushed to a local Las Vegas hospital and the surgery was successful.
Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, released the following statement:
"Following Saturday evening's UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg.
"The successful surgery, performed by Dr Steven Sanders, the UFC's Orthopedic Surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson's left tibia. The broken fibula was stabilised and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months.
"Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community. There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover."
Weidman is 11-0, and had beaten Silva at UFC 162 in July.
Silva later took to Twitter and apologized to his country for his loss.
“Brazil I’m sorry to have disappointed you. Did not want to. Give my best I swear,” Silva wrote.
Brasil sinto muito não queria ter desapontado vocês dei o meu melhor eu juro
