If You’re A Professional Athlete, You Pretty Much Can’t Have Casual Sex (Or Fall In Love) With Anyone
Casual sex will make your life a living nightmare and no one will ever actually love you for who you are if you play sports for a living.
That's the main takeaway from Broke, last night's 30 for 30 documentary on the financial pitfalls that professional athletes often face. (Another takeaway: NFL players make peanuts compared to MLB players. If I some day have an athletically gifted son, he's playing centerfield and not running back. Also, his name will not be Bernie, Andre, or Keith.)
Groupies are everywhere, according to the athletes interviewed by Broke filmmaker Billy Corben. But we knew this already. Oh, and they're here to take your shit; we knew this already, too. We also knew that some women are attracted to athletes because of their money, we knew that some of them try to intentionally get pregnant during casual sexual encounters, and we knew that athletes' marriages can often end in a very expensive divorce settlement.
But, did you know that there's a website called BallerAlert.com that sends women mobile alerts any time a rich athlete is at a nearby club? Oh, also: did you know that if you're a professional athlete, most of the romantic overtures you entertain will be shrouded in ulterior motives? And that, really, you will never truly not be alone? Unless you're, like, Phil Mickelson or something?
The line from Keith McCants at the end of this clip is truly heartbreaking. ("It comes with a price. And the price is: your money.") Yikes. Kind of glad I'm actually broke.
