Hockey Announcer Canned After Tweeting Opposition To Same-Sex Marriage
It all started when New York Rangers forward Sean Avery came out in support of gay marriage. It was a brave thing to proclaim, Avery being a part of jock culture and all.
Unsurprisingly, he took flak for his stance. Surprisingly, the flak came from a sports agent, Todd Reynolds, sharing his personal opposition to gay marriage via his sports management company's Twitter account. And later on, Damian Goddard of Canadian sports channel Rogers Sportsnet voiced his own opposition toward same-sex marriage on Twitter. This didn't end so well for Goddard, though - Rogers quickly fired him.
This is what he said:
I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage.
Then he sent out this bold and holier-than-thou tweet:
To those who have been...well...critical of my stance, God bless you. You are all in my prayers, and I am so sad for the pain in your lives.
Dave Rashford, a spokesman for the channel, said of the firing, "Damian Goddard is no longer with Rogers Sportsnet. Mr. Goddard was a freelance contractor and in recent weeks it had become clear that he is not the right fit for our organization."
Sounds a bit harsh; where's the fine line? Apparently voicing an opinion in opposition to gay marriage is offensive enough to get fired. I'm not saying what Goddard said wasn't offensive and bigoted, but is this how we handle dissenting opinions now?
Disagree at your own peril.
