Isiah Thomas, Who Allegedly Spread “Magic Is Gay” Rumors, Supports Same-Sex Marriage
Isiah Thomas, who is alleged to have spread rumors about Magic Johnson's sexuality after Johnson announced he was HIV-positive, is now posing in a new ad campaign in support of gay marriage rights.
Thomas and his son, Joshua, posed for the NOH8 campaign, which was "started in the wake of the passage of Proposition 8 in California in 2008." Proposition 8 was declared to be unconstitutional by a judge this week.
Magic Johnson accused Thomas of spreading rumors about Johnson's sexuality in the gay panic that followed Johnson's HIV diagnosis, and Johnson says it's what caused their once-close relationship to disintegrate. Thomas, for his part, denies ever talking behind Magic's back.
In other Isiah Thomas news, Knicks president Donnie Walsh is said to be quite peeved at team owner James Dolan's decision to hire Thomas as some sort of special adviser. The New York Post describes Donnie's current mood thusly:
Knicks president Donnie Walsh is livid that Isiah Thomas is back in the organization and feels his standing with the franchise could be compromised by owner James Dolan's decision to rehire Thomas.
Without Walsh's knowledge, Dolan and Thomas hatched a scheme in which Thomas could become a part-time consultant while remaining the coach at Florida International.
If I was Walsh, I'd be livid as well. Thomas' tenure as Knicks team president from 2003-2008 was rough, to say the least (oh, hello $11.6 million sexual harassment lawsuit!), and only now, thanks to Walsh's frugal maneuvering, are the Knicks seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Now, Thomas is returning to the team he destroyed, and he clearly has the ear of owner James Dolan. Oh, destructive relationships in sports, you never cease to amaze.
