Judge Gives Ex-Stanford Swimmer Six Months For Sex Assault Because Prison Would Have ‘Severe Impact’
Just so you know, the going sentence for sexual assault behind a dumpster in Santa Clara County is six months in county jail. That is, if you're an athlete at Stanford University.
What? You thought it might be six years in prison? You're so naive. Actually the maximum sentence is 14 years, but Brock Turner, a three-time All-American swimmer from Dayton, Ohio, was sentenced by a Palo Alto judge to a mere six months for a sex assault on the Stanford campus in 2015. Turner was a freshman at Stanford at the time (he's since dropped out of school).
In late March Turner was convicted of three felonies: assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated woman, sexually penetrating an intoxicated person with a foreign object and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object. The incident occurred in Jan., 2015, when two cyclists on the Stanford campus spotted Turner sexually assaulting a woman behind a dumpster.
This story just gets more and more charming.
Turner attempted to flee, but the cyclists chased him down and tackled him, holding him until police arrived. Turner had met the woman at a party and assaulted her when she passed out.
Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of six years in prison, but judge Aaron Persky cited Turner's age and lack of criminal history in his sentencing.
Everyone knows you get a mulligan on your first sexual assault.
"A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him … I think he will not be a danger to others.”
Turner's lawyer, Mike Armstrong:
"He is fundamentally a good young man from a good family with a record of real accomplishment who made bad choices during his time at Stanford of about four months, especially related to alcohol."
Excuse me while I vomit into this Stanford tote bag.
So here in 2016, sexual assault on college campuses is still way behind in the standings, trailing clueless judges by at least 7 games in the loss column. Only this is no game. Freakin' ridiculous.
