Sports Media Gaffes Of The Year, #2 – Brett Favre’s Jenn Sterger Sexting Adventure
2010 was a banner year for controversy in the world of sports media. From the usual barrage of accidental profanity, to the fairly untrodden territory of Twitter faux pas, up to and including the cultural phenomenon that was athletes taking pictures of their penises and sending them to everybody, this year really did have it all if you enjoyed watching people make fools of themselves.
From now until December 30th we’ll be going through our favorite oopsies from the year that was. So come and join us, won’t you, as we count down the Top Ten Sports Media Gaffes of the Year! Today’s gaffe: a legendary NFL quarterback sends a picture of his penis to a New York Jets employee.
I have taken pictures of my dong and sent them to a girl.
Do not act surprised.
While I wouldn't go so far as to call them a part of "the modern mating ritual" or anything like that, sending someone dong pictures (or chooch pictures, if you're a girl) is becoming increasingly acceptable behavior for people in my age range (I am 23). In fact, I would say that 80% of my friends, guys and girls, have sent naked pictures to someone they were dating.
Notice I said "someone they were dating."
I know only one person who would ever send pictures of his dong to someone he either didn't know very well, or didn't know at all. He is a raging exhibitionist who will probably die alone, and I'm not even 100% sure that he would do it.
Which brings us to Brett Favre.
Brett Favre is a very famous person. He's not Oprah famous, because he's wearing a helmet most of the time he's on TV, but he's famous enough that even if you had no interest in the NFL, and you were at a restaurant and someone leaned over and whispered "Brett Favre just walked in," you'd perk up and do the bobbing head thing to try to catch a glimpse of him.
For some reason, this very famous person thought it would be okay to send pictures of his dong to a much younger woman that he had never even met. As if by saying, "All of this can be yours," she would drop what she was doing and instantly come running.
The thing is, 9 out of 10 times, this strategy probably worked for Brett Favre. Maybe not in the form of a dong picture, but in the form of a slightly aggressive text, or one of those "Aw, shucks" voicemails he left for Jenn Sterger. This time, however, it didn't, and now, instead of sending a picture of his dong to one stranger, he's inadvertently sent it to millions.
Here's what happens to you when you do that:
I did a TV interview yesterday where I was asked if the Sterger situation is over for Favre, since the NFL fined him for it and their investigation is officially completed. My answer at the time, which I still believe to be true: Brett Favre will hear about this forever, and regret it for just as long.
