Meet The Girl Who Skates, Surfs, Skis And Models Underwear…Without Legs
When I was 10 years old, I decided I was going to start skateboarding. After convincing my Dad to cough up the dough to buy my friend's old board, and convincing my mom I was going to wear every piece of neon protective equipment they sold at Toys R' Us, I started my journey to cooltown. I was gonna be so cool. Fast-forward 19 years later and I have still yet to land a single trick.
Point is, skateboarding is really hard.
Later, when I was 20, I moved to Costa Rica to teach English and surf. Looking to offset the disappointing reality that I was never going to be able to have fun on a wheeled board, a committed an inordinate amount of my expansive downtime (kids get a lot of impromptu vacations in Costa Rica) to learning how to ride waves. Abandoned by her family in Pak Chong, Thailand, at one week old, Kanya was adopted by an American family from Portland, Oregon, where she grew up and learned to do two things I know to be nearly impossible. When she's not training to join the U.S. Paralympic track and field team -- or the U.S. Winter Paralympic monoski team -- she's making $1,000 a day as an underwear model (yet one more thing I absolutely could never do).
