Since 1993, the men and women who associate themselves with the world of sports have been honored at a ceremony like no other. It doesn’t feature the voices of the Grammy’s, the star power of the Oscars, or the pizzazz of the Tony’s, but the ESPYS present us with the chance to honor those who provide us with the greatest gift of all, sports entertainment. Of course, so does winning a championship but that’s besides the point.
The host of the ESPY’s can’t just be someone who just stands up there and reads off a prompter. A good host needs to be able to relate to the sports maniacs of the world, while also keeping the casual viewers awake. This year, future WWE Hall of Famer John Cena hosts the show for the first time. Cena performs in front of a live audience weekly, has experience hosting the “Today Show” and “Live with Kelly”, while also co-starring in several movies. With that kind of experience, Cena is a perfect choice to be the host for tomorrow night’s event.
Over the last 23 years, a number of other celebrities, comedians, athletes, and Jimmy Smits have lead the ceremony. Here, we take a look at the individuals that stood out to us most during their time as emcee.
