Joe Musgrove couldn’t have landed in a better spot than with the San Diego Padres. Musgrove will be back in his hometown as he was born in the city of El Cajon and attended high school there. The Padres acquired Musgrove in a three-team deal as they’ll send reliever, David Bednar, along with three prospects — outfielder Hudson Head, left-hander Omar Cruz, and right-hander Drake Fellows — to Pittsburgh. The Pirates will send left-hander Joey Lucchesi to the Mets in exchange for catcher Endy Rodríguez.
Musgrove will be in the mix to join a starting rotation, likely to include Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, and Chris Paddack. Dinelson Lamet could also be in line for a starting job if he’s given a clean bill of health after an elbow injury forced him to miss the playoffs last year.
You could make the argument that the Padres have the best group of starting pitchers, and they might actually supplant the Dodgers or the Yankees as the favorite to win the World Series in a few years.
