Are the Golden State Warriors NBA Championship contenders?
Who would have thought there could be a conversation about the Warriors potentially being in the discussion to contend for an NBA title this season. It would have been surprising enough if the conversation was if they were a playoff team. Maybe we should just check back in a few months, but they’ve had a big week. Golden State put up a massive victory over the mighty Lakers on Monday and followed it up by beating the Spurs.
Kelly Oubre hit some big shots against San Antonio, and rookie center James Weisman had a nice 20-point game, including six dunks. He was just dominating inside, which is a good sign because that’s what the Warriors have been missing. So if Wiseman and Oubre can play as they did against the Spurs and Steph Curry obviously looks like Steph Curry again, can they actually get back a little quicker into that conversation of one of the better teams earlier than most thought they would?
That game against the Lakers was also eye-opening — where maybe people should not be discounting the Golden State Warriors quite yet. Anytime you have Steph Curry, you have a chance to win any game, that’s for sure. But when you get contributions from guys like Oubre, who hits two of his four threes and converts six of his eight free throws, it’s a big difference-maker. Even though his field goal percentage wasn’t so great, he hit the big shots that really counted and affected the game.
So you definitely need Oubre as well as contributions from Wiseman, who probably had his best game of the season. They will hope he can have the confidence to build on that and keep growing. Then Steve Kerr can find some plays that work well for Wiseman and get him in spots that he’s comfortable shooting and scoring from.
For these guys, it was the shortest off-season in NBA history, so guys were drafted, and then pretty much two days later, we’re at training camp. So I’m sure there was some figuring out for Kerr to get to know the NBA’s second overall draft pick, his pick, in Wiseman that probably plays into some of this as well.
