ATLANTA HAWKS VS. MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES NEWS AND NOTES
Both of these teams are dealing with their fair share of injuries at the moment. The Hawks have listed Danilo Gallinari as doubtful, while Cam Reddish and De’Andre Hunter are both listed as questionable. Bogdan Bogdanovic also remains out of the lineup, which leaves the Hawks a bit thin on the wing.
That said none of those players are really vital to the Hawks’ success. Gallinari has been great when on the court this season, but he’s played just 28 total minutes. Other than Gallo, DeAndre Hunter is the only member of the group that owns a positive Net Rating differential per Cleaning the Glass. That means they should be able to survive even if Reddish and Hunter are both ruled out.
The bigger absence involves the Timberwolves. Karl-Anthony Towns remains sidelined due to COVID-19, and it’s impossible to understate his importance for the Timberwolves this season. They’ve increased their Net Rating by +22.8 points per 100 possessions with Towns on the floor, which puts him in the 97th percentile for all qualified players this season. They’ve been drastically better on both ends of the court as well, scoring +15.8 additional points per 100 possessions while allowing -7.0 fewer points per 100 possessions.
Overall, the Timberwolves have been outscored by a whopping -13.4 points per 100 possessions with Towns off the floor this year.
They were able to cover without Towns in their last outing, but that came against a much weaker squad in the Orlando Magic. The Timberwolves were also much more effective than usual from 3-point range – they made 42.9% of their attempts – while the Magic shot just 32.3% from behind the arc. They’re a prime regression candidate against Atlanta.
