BROOKLYN NETS VS. CLEVELAND CAVALIERS NEWS AND NOTES
The Nets lost the first game of the “big three” era to this same team on Wednesday, but there were always going to be growing pains. Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving are still learning how to play together, and all three players are used to carry huge usage rates and having the ball in their hands. They’re going to have to sacrifice to make it work, so there was a bit of a feeling-out process in their first game together.
Harden ended up being the odd man out from a scoring perspective. He attempted just 14 shots, which was well below the marks for Kyrie (28) and Durant (25). It appears as though he’s going to serve as the primary distributor for this trio, and he led the team with 12 assists on Wednesday.
Even though they lost to the Cavs in their last meeting, there’s no reason to expect this team to struggle again. They employ three of the best players in the league, and the Cavs employ none. No disrespect to guys like Collin Sexton and Andre Drummond, but there is a clear gulf in talent between these squads.
Additionally, the Cavs are still missing two of their better players. Darius Garland has missed the past eight games with a shoulder injury. He’s questionable to make his return to the lineup tonight, but he will likely be on a minute’s restriction even if he’s active. Kevin Love remains out, and while he’s not the same dominant player that he was in his prime, he’s still one of the better scorers on the Cavaliers.
That means a large scoring burden is going to fall on Sexton’s shoulders in this matchup. He was able to come through on Wednesday – he scored 42 points and shot 55.2% from the field and 45.5% from 3-point range – but he’s likely due for some shooting regression tonight. The same can be said about the Cavaliers in general, who hit 50% of their 3-pointers on Wednesday. That is clearly unsustainable, especially since the Cavaliers have been merely average in terms of 3-point shooting accuracy this season.
