Brooklyn Nets vs. New Orleans Pelicans News and Notes
The Nets are not only having trouble putting their Big Three on the court, but lately, it’s even been a struggle to see a Big Two in Brooklyn.
Kevin Durant exited the Nets Sunday loss at Miami after playing just four minutes. During the first quarter of the 109-107 setback, KD suffered a left thigh contusion and will not play tonight against the Pelicans. Led by the Big One, Kyrie Irving, the Nets had every opportunity to win this game before going scoreless for the final 3:30 when Miami had an 8-0 run to complete the late comeback. Irving had 20 points and nine assists but shot just 32 percent from the field and bricked the Nets’ last three attempts. Landry Shamet scored a career-high 30 points in the loss, while Joe Harris was the only other Brooklyn player to score in double-figures with 12. It was the Nets’ second loss in three games and third in their past five. They will now face New Orleans with Kyrie as the long Big Three representative as James Harden will miss his seventh straight game with a hamstring injury.
While Brooklyn has rich-people problems sitting a game out of first in the East, New Orleans dropping winnable games is much more impactful, desperately trying to get into the play-in tournament. The Pelicans have dropped three in a row, including two straight overtime games where they held the advantage in the fourth.
On Friday in Washington, the Pels had a seven-point lead with just over two minutes remaining but allowed the Wizards to close out regulation on a 7-0 run to send it into OT. Washington rode the momentum into the extra frame to pick up the 117-115 victory. Two nights later, New Orleans had a three-point led with 7.8 seconds left but botched the coach’s call to foul the Knicks before they could attempt a game-tying shot. Stan Van Gundy was incensed when Reggie Bullock nailed the three to send it to overtime. New York then dominated the extra period and handed New Orleans a 10-point loss.
Zion Williamson had 34 in the setback that put New Orleans 3.5 games back of San Antonio for the final play-in spot. While the Pels can score their defense and closing out games has really been a problem most of the year.
The Nets are 6-1 against the spread as a road dog, while New Orleans has covered just once in their past five. Brooklyn has gone over 14 of 17 against teams with a losing record, while the Pels have gone above the number in 21 of 27 as a favorite. The total has also been surpassed in 23 of 28 head-to-head meetings, while the Nets have covered five straight against New Orleans.
