Charlotte Hornets vs. Dallas Mavericks News and Notes
Despite a bit of a disappointing start, Dallas is coming in off their best performance of the season, maybe their best in franchise history.
The Mavericks went out to LA and absolutely destroyed the Clippers in historic fashion. Dallas built an insane 50-point lead by the break for the largest halftime margin in NBA history. Granted, LA didn’t have Kawhi Leonard, but a 77-27 midway lead that ends in a 124-73 win is impressive with anyone in or out of the lineup. Just think about that for a second. The Mavs scored more in the first half than LA did in the entire game. Dallas needed the offensive outburst after losing their first two contests scoring 108 points per game, a bottom-ten league average.
As expected, MVP favorite Luka Doncic is leading the Mavs. The Slovenian superstar is seventh in league scoring averaging 27.7 points per game. Doncic is putting up big numbers despite struggling from three-point land. The 21-year-old is shooting just 12.5 percent from behind the arc after shooting 36 in last year’s playoffs and almost 32 percent in the 2019-20 season. Doncic is averaging two fewer 3-pointers hit this season compared to last.
The offensive load is definitely on Doncic’s shoulders as Dallas has just two other players scoring in double-digits this season. But, help may be on the way.
Kristaps Porzingis was a full participant in practice on Tuesday for the first time since injuring his knee during the playoffs last year. Porzingis put up almost 24 points per game in the playoffs after averaging 20.4 in his first season in Dallas last year. Unfortunately, Porzingis won’t be any help against the Hornets, but the seven-footer could be back in a couple of weeks.
Because of their lack of punch, the Mavs have focussed on defense for gritty head coach Rick Carlisle. Dallas is sixth in team defense, giving up just 106 points per game.
The Hornets finally showed some D in their first win of the season over Brooklyn on Sunday. Charlotte held the Nets to a season-low 104 points, holding them to 42 percent shooting while outrebounding Brooklyn 52-46.
On the offensive end, big free-agent signing Gordon Hayward put up his second 28-point game of the season in the team’s first win. Hayward is also only behind starting point guard Devonte’ Graham in team assists averaging seven dimes per game. The former Celtic’s 55 percent field goal shooting rate only trails center Bismack Biyombo’s 66 percent on the team.
Charlotte comes in rather healthy, while the Mavs could be without a big part of their offensive attack. The team’s second-leading scorer Josh Richardson and his 16.7 points per will be a game-time decision because of a strained left calf.
Each team has covered just once this season, and both have hit the under in two of their three games. They split last year’s season series in the standings and on the betting slips, with each team covering once in their wins. The over hit in both head-to-head meetings last year after going under in their previous three meetings, going back to 2018.
