Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic News and Notes
Both the Hornets and Magic come into this one absolutely reeling. Charlotte has lost four straight, with a postponed game against Washington in there, after looking like they found their way, winning four in a row. The Hornets’ most recent loss came at the hands of the defensively challenged Bulls who took out the Carolina team 123-110 on Friday. Gordon Hayword looked great, scoring a game-high 34 while Devonte’ Graham poured in 24, but the rest of the Hornets didn’t carry their weight.
Before that, Charlotte dropped a two-game set on the road against the Raptors in a pair of tightly contested games. The Hornets lost each game by three-points and were in it right up until the final buzzer. Hayward missed the first game of this back-to-back but scored a game-high 25 in the Game 2 loss. Hayward will need some help from his NBA 23rd ranked offense for them to get off the schneid when they hook up with the Magic.
Orlando is in worse shape than their opponents on the offensive end. The Magic rank 28th with 105 points per game, 29th in field goal percentage, 30th in three-point shooting percentage and have made the fifth-fewest triples in the league. Not hard to see why this team has dropped seven of their past eight games with a postponed game with Boston in the mix. Orlando’s lone win in nearly three weeks came in very improbable fashion.
The Magic trailed the lowly Timberwolves by two points with about three seconds to go. Cole Anthony pulled down a defensive rebound, pushed it all the way upcourt to hit a ridiculous off-balanced three-pointer on the run to escape Minnesota with a one-point victory.
In the Magic’s defense, they have been bit pretty hard by the injury bug. They lost starting guard Markelle Fultz for the season a few weeks ago after getting off to a hot start. Michael Carter-Williams hasn’t played since January 4, and Evan Fournier missed nine games before coming back this week against the T’wolves. Fournier might have been the most significant missing piece as the young guard is one of the team’s best scorers. The 28-year-old Frenchman immediately impacted on his return, scoring a game-high 26 in Orlando’s OT loss to the Pacers on Friday after putting up 24 in his first game back on Wednesday.
The Magic have covered in four straight against Charlotte, with the over being the play in four of their past five head-to-head meetings. Charlotte is 4-0 against the spread in their past four on the road and past four as road underdogs. Five straight games have gone under when Orlando is the favorite and also when they play at home.
