Chicago Bulls vs. Portland Trail Blazers News and Notes
The Chicago Bulls have quickly sped up their early-season slow start. After dropping the first three games of the season, Chicago has now won three of four and can get to .500 with an upset win in Portland.
The Bulls are coming off a big 10-point win over the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas was surprisingly without superstar Luka Doncic as a last-minute scratch with a quad issue. Zach LaVine took full advantage of the shorthanded Mavs pouring in a season-high 39 points in Chicago’s win. LaVine leads the Bulls with 24.6 points per game and ranks 16th in the league. The play of LaVine is the biggest reason Chicago is surprisingly a top-ten scoring team. The Bulls are getting a ton of their points at the line, ranked third in the NBA with nearly 22 free throws per game. Lavine leads the Chicago charge from the charity stripe with a team-high 5.4 foul shots per game on a sparkling 88.4 percent shooting.
As good as Chicago has been on the offensive end is as bad as they’ve been on D. The Bulls are dead last, giving up 121.3 points per game. Their defense reflects the offense from the line and gives up the third-most free throws in the NBA. Chicago is also tied for sixth-worst, allowing teams to shoot 48 percent from the field.
Portland hasn’t been much better on the defensive side of the ball. The Trail Blazers allow just two points per game less than the Bulls with the league’s fifth-worst defense. Giving up a field goal percentage just a few tenths below the Bulls has the Blazers ranked fifth-worst in that category as well. Portland has also been regularly getting outrebounded, giving up the eighth-most boards in the game.
Like Chicago, the Blazers can score. Portland scores just over a point more than the Bulls to land a few slots ahead of them with a number seven league rank in points. They also mirror Chicago from the line averaging just two fewer free throws to rank sixth in the league putting up 20 per game. Portland’s most significant difference from the Bulls offensively is from behind the arc. The Blazers score about nine more points a game from three-point land and are second in the league hitting 15.5 triples per night.
Like Chicago, the Blazers get the most production from their guard, or early in this season guards. Point guard Damian Lillard has usually been the man in Portland but backcourt partner CJ McCollum. After leading the Blazers in scoring the past five seasons, Lillard has had to make way for McCollum, who’s leading the team with 28 points per game. Don’t get it twisted; Lillard is right behind him, putting up 26.6 a night, to go along with a team-leading 6.2 assists.
The pair of guards have been on fire from deep, combining for 8.5 triples a game or almost a quarter of the Blazers offense from their three-point shooting alone. McCollum and Lillard are firing at a very efficient combined 40 percent from behind the arc this season.
While Portland comes in relatively healthy to this one, the Bulls are missing a big piece in Lauri Markkanen. Markkanen is the team’s second-leading scorer and best three-point shooter.
The Bulls come in on a hot streak with the spread covering in four of their past five games, while Portland hasn’t been very reliable, failing to cover in four of their six games this year. The Blazers have been reliable against the Bulls, however, as Portland has covered in six of their past seven meetings with Chicago going back to 2016.
