Dallas Mavericks vs. Charlotte Hornets News and Notes
A pair of surging teams hook up this season for the second time when the Mavericks visit the Hornets in Charlotte. Dallas comes in on a season-high three-game win streak, while Charlotte comes in winning four straight games.
The Hornets are exceeding expectations with a record north of .500 on the backs of this four-game stretch. Keep in mind Charlotte is not exactly taking down world-beaters during their win streak. The Hornets have beaten the slumping Hawks twice, New York and New Orleans during the four-game soft spot in the schedule. Only Atlanta has a .500 record at 5-5 of the bunch.
Charlotte has been getting production from their big off-season free-agent signing this season and during the stretch. Gordon Hayward scored
28 of his 34 points in the first half against the Knicks for the most recent win of the four-game. The former Celtic has averaged 29.3 points a game during the streak to propel his team-leading season average of 22.5 points per game.
Rookie LaMelo Ball has been chipping in for Charlotte as the team’s third-leading scorer putting up 12.6 points per game. Ball is also leading the team with seven boards a night, the second-highest rate among point guards in the NBA. The PG is also second on the team with six assists per game.
The Hornets have also been successful on the defensive end this season. Charlotte is allowing the eight-fewest points per game at 107.5 points per game. They’ve been outstanding defending the three allowing the fourth-lowest three-point shooting percentage in the league.
The Mavericks’ three-game win streak has been a little more impressive than the Hornets. Dallas has beaten the Rockets and Nuggets on the road while most recently taking out the Magic at home. Luka Doncic has been leading the way for the Mavs.
Doncic averaged 30.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 11.3 assists during the Mavericks’ three-game winning streak and tops Dallas in all categories on the season. The Slovenian superstar is tied for sixth in the NBA, scoring 26.6 points per game. He also leads all-league point guards with 9.3 rebounds per game, and his 8.3 assists per game are fifth-best in the Association. At the same time, the current Western Conference Player of the Week is the story coming into this one; a “Unicorn” siting may overshadow him.
Kristaps Porzingis is expected to make his season debut Wednesday night in Charlotte. The Mavs big man is coming off knee surgery in October. Porzingis was the team’s second-leading scorer last year, putting up 20.4 points per game while leading the team in rebounding. The seven-foot Latvian also brings a defensive presence to the team. Porzingis led the team with 2.0 blocks per game last year, which landed him sixth in the league in that category.
The Mavericks had their Monday meeting with New Orleans postponed because they couldn’t meet the league minimum requirements of dressing eight players due to COVID protocols. While Dallas did bring 12 players to Charlotte, Josh Richardson, Dorian Finney-Smith, Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, and Jalen Brunson are not among them and will remain out while following the league’s health and safety protocols.
Both teams have covered in every game of their win streaks while Dallas has gone under in five of seven, and the Hornets have hit the under in four of five and eight of their past ten games. With their upset win over Dallas in their last meeting on December 30th, Charlotte covered while the Mavs have covered three of their past five head-to-head meetings. The under has been the play in four of the last six matchups between these two teams.
