Dallas Mavericks vs. Chicago Bulls News and Notes
Both Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have gotten off to a sluggish start. Part of the slug seems to have come from Doncic’s conditioning behind where he thinks it should be. Luka has admitted he didn’t come into this season in prime shape but looks to be shaking off the sludge.
Doncic put up a season-high 27 points to go with 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season to get the Mavs past Miami on Friday. The Slovenian sharp-shooter finished just three assists away from a triple-double in the 93-83 win. Doncic is thought to have taken a knee in the quad Friday, and while questionable, he is expected to play against Chicago on Sunday. Make sure you double-check his status before tip-off before making any moves.
While the victory is nothing to get to wild about as the Mavs’ second win of the year, it is a start. The bright side is Dallas’s two wins come against the Eastern Conference Champion Heat and one of the top teams in the West in the Clippers.
While Doncic (24.4) and the Mavericks scoring is down, finding themselves 23rd in points per game with 107, they have been much improved on the defensive end. Dallas is giving up just 103 points per game, good enough for fourth-best in the NBA.
Playing against a team like Chicago could be just what the Mavericks offense needs to get going. The Bulls are allowing the third-most points in the league, giving up almost 124 points a night. Chicago is also letting opponents shoot 48.7 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from three-point land, both bottom-eight in the league.
Chicago has given up these bloated numbers to teams that aren’t exactly world-beaters. The Bulls have played Washington twice, a group that just picked up their first win of the year on New Year’s Day, and a Warriors squad, a shell of its former offensive self.
The Bulls have shown they can score, even though it’s been mostly against sub-par teams. Chicago ranks tenth in the NBA, putting up almost 114 per game. Much of the Bulls scoring has been done at the charity stripe. Chicago ranks fourth in the league, making 21 free throws per game.
Zach LaVine’s been the most significant factor in Chicago’s offense. The veteran guard leads the team with 22 points and five free throws made per game. The deadly shooter is also putting up 2.2 triples per game, only bettered by teammate Lauri Markkanen’s 2.8. Markkanen, the team’s second-leading scorer at 17.3 points per game while shooting nearly 50 percent from three-point land. Unfortunately for Chicago, the Finnish sharp-shooter will miss this one due to COVID-protocols.
Chicago actually has several players out because of COVID-19. Chandler Hutchison, who tested positive for coronavirus, Tomas Satoransky, and Ryan Arcidiacono will all join Markkanen on the shelf under the league’s health and safety program.
The Mavericks have covered just two games this season, but those two did come in their past three games. On the other hand, Chicago has covered three of their past four despite four outright losses on the year.
Dallas has gone under in three straight and four of their five games this season, while the Bulls split their six games on the total in 2020-21.
