Dallas Mavericks vs. Indiana Pacers News and Notes
The Dallas Mavericks are directly feeling the effects of the pandemic. Dallas is in the midst of their first three-game losing streak since the 2018-19 season, and it’s primarily due to being shorthanded from players landing in the league’s health and safety protocol program. The Mavs have been without regulars Dorian Finney-Smith, Josh Richardson, Maxi Kleber, and Dwight Powell for nearly two weeks.
Jalen Brunson returned for the Mavericks’ 116-93 loss to Toronto on Monday after missing four games on the medical safety list. Brunson scored 13 points in his return but said he’s still not in game shape following the loss. Superstar Luka Doncic had a big game despite being keyed on defensively. Doncic went off for a triple-double of 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists in the loss. Dallas’ other superstar Kristaps Porzingis chipped in with 23, so it’s clear the Mavs are missing support from the supporting cast and are being hurt by their lack of depth right now.
The Pacers are getting used to life without energetic guard Victor Oladipo. Oladipo was shipped out to Houston in the James Harden multi-team trade. Their big man, Domantas Sabonis, hasn’t missed a beat since the deal. The stretch forward is coming off his franchise-record 13th straight double-double after putting up 19 points and 14 rebounds in a 129-96 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Before that, Indiana won two in a row, with Sabonis putting up games of 18 and 14 and 23 and 15 in wins in Golden State and Portland. The Pacers were able to go a respectable 2-2 on their four-game west coast road trip.
Indiana has still yet to see Caris LeVert in a Pacers uniform. LeVert came over in the Harden deal, but after a small mass was found on his kidney, he’s out indefinitely. It’s not known at this point how long LeVert will be out, but once he returns, he will provide a significant boost on offense for the Pacers.
This will be the first time the two-teams matchup since right before the pandemic shutdown, where both teams’ superstars came to play. Indiana edged the Mavs 112-109 on March 8th of last year as Doncic put up a 36-point, 10-rebound, eight-assist effort while Mr. double-double Domantas Sabonis collected 20 points and 17 rebounds in the three-point win.
Dallas went under in their past four games, while the Pacers have hit the under in their past four as a home underdog. On the spread, the Mavs have covered in five of their past seven while Indiana has gone 50-50 against the line in their past ten. When these teams have gone head-to-head recently, Dallas has had the edge. The Mavericks have covered in five of their past seven against the Pacers, while the over has been the play in nine of their past 13 meetings.
