DENVER NUGGETS VS. SACRAMENTO KINGS NEWS AND NOTES
The Sacramento Kings haven’t been playing like a team on the current longest NBA active playoff drought. Sacramento hasn’t had a taste of the postseason in 14 seasons but is doing their best to change that in 2021.
Sac-town started the year with an impressive win in Denver, followed by a victory over the Phoenix Suns on Boxing Day. They did look sluggish, dropping the second leg of a back-to-back to the Suns 116-100 but will try and rebound against a team they’ve already beaten this season.
The Kings will look for their second win over the Nuggets in six days, this time in their own barn. Less than a week ago in Denver, Sacramento scored a season-high 124 points powered by an incredibly balanced attack.
Seven players scored in double-figures, including three Kings that put up 20 or more points. Buddy Hield led the way with 22, followed by 21-point nights from De’Aaron Fox and Harrison Barnes. Sacramento got a massive performance from their bench, putting up 41 points.
Balance is the name of the game for the Kings, with four players averaging double-digit scoring with none cracking 20 points per game. They also are big on team rebounding having three players averaging nine-plus boards per game. As a team, Sacramento has tied for fourth in the NBA with nearly 50 rebounds a game.
Denver has been our-rebounded in both of their losses this season. The Nuggets have the eighth-lowest rebound per game average in the NBA so far this year. They were able to up the effort level for their first win of the season Monday night against Houston. Denver out-boarded the Rockets 52-38 in the convincing 124-111 victory. Nikola Jokic led the way with 12 rebounds but did much more than just that.
Jokic is off to an incredible start for the Nuggets. The Serbian big man put up his second triple-double of the year against Houston, one that included 18 assists. That’s just silly for a seven-footer. Jokic is averaging 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists this season. Those numbers rival Hall of Famer and triple-double machine Oscar Robinson.
Jamal Murray is trying to be Robin to Jokic’s Batman (not the Joker) after getting off to a slow start. Murray scored just nine in the opening night loss to these Kings and followed up with a dismal first half in their next game against the Clippers. The Toronto, Canada native turned it around to finish with 23, albeit on 45 percent shooting. His best game of the year came in their first victory of the season against Houston. Murray scored 21 on 50 percent shooting, including going almost 67 percent from behind the arc.
Both teams come in relatively healthy aside from the Nuggets JaMychal Green. Green has yet to play this season as he continues to recover from a left calf injury.
Denver has covered just once this year while the Kings have met the spread in two of their three early-season games. Sacramento has gone under in two games and needed overtime to hit their only over of the season. The Nuggets are an over the number machine. Denver has gone over in all three games this season and has actually gone above the number in their past six and in seven of their past eight games going back to last season. Sacramento has covered in three straight and four of their past five meetings with the Nuggets.
