Detroit Pistons vs. Cleveland Cavaliers News and Notes
It’s been a long season already in Detroit as the Pistons try and do something they’ve yet to do all season when they meet the Cavaliers in Cleveland Wednesday night. The Pistons will try and win two in a row for the first time this year after just breaking their most recent losing streak of the season of four games. Detroit was able to take advantage of a Joel Embid-less Sixers team on Monday to get the 119-104 win over Philly. It was just the Motown club’s third win in their past 12 and only fourth victory of the season. Delon Wright led the way scoring a season-high 28 points against the 76ers, while team-leading scorer Jerami Grant chipped in with 24.
Grant is the Pistons’ only player averaging more than 15 points per game, so it’s not surprising to see them in the bottom ten of the league in team scoring. It’s also not all that surprising to see Detroit ranked dead-last in field goal percentage. They haven’t been much better on the defensive end as the Pistons allow the ninth-most points in the NBA.
The Cavaliers have been by all accounts overachievers this season, sitting just a game below .500. Cleveland will try and hit that .500 mark with their second win of the season over the Pistons. The Cavs took a double-overtime thriller in Detroit on Boxing Day 128-119. Team-leading scorer Collin Sexton led the way with a game-high 32 while Andre Drummond put up 23 points with a game-high 16 boards, and Darius Garland had 21 along with a game-high 12 assists in the win over the Pistons.
More recently, Cleveland had won three in a row, including back-to-back wins against the Brooklyn Nets’ super team. The Cavs couldn’t keep it going as they ran into a couple of top teams in their past two games. On Sunday, CLE was blown out by the Celtics and dropped a seven-point game this next night against the world champion Lakers.
Despite the recent setbacks, the play of Collin Sexton has remained strong. The third-year man has really taken huge strides this year to lead the Cavs putting up a career-high 24.8 points per game. Sexton now ranks 15th in the league in scoring and has four points per game to his average scoring rate in each of the past two seasons. The Cavs guard is also putting up points in an efficient manner shooting over 50 percent from the field, an excellent rate for a shooter out of the backcourt.
Blake Griffin will sit out this first leg of the Pistons’ back-to-back as the Motor City team play the Lakers on Thursday. It’s just a rest day for Griffin as Detroit chooses to have him in there for the bigger game against LA. Derrick Rose is expected back for the Pistons after missing the past two with a knee issue. For the Cavs, Larry Nance Jr. is a game-time decision after a wrist injury shelved him on Monday.
The over has been the play in the Pistons past six road games, past five as an underdog and five of six overall, while Cleveland has gone over in their past five games. CLE has covered in four of their past five while Detroit has covered in two-straight and has only missed the spread twice in their past seven.
