Detroit Pistons vs. Denver Nuggets News and Notes
The league’s only 15-loss team looks to avoid becoming the NBA’s only 16-loss team as they continue their west-coast road trip in Denver. The Pistons come in off a 27-point blowout loss in Golden State on Saturday and have now lost six of eight and eight of their past 11. Detroit watched Steph Curry light them up for a game-high 28 points, leading five Warriors to score in double figures. On the other hand, the Pistons had only two players break double-digits as team-leading scorer Jerami Grant put up 18 while Josh Jackson added 17 from the bench. Outside of Grant, the other four starters combined for a pathetic 18 points. You just can’t win ball games like that.
It’s not surprising to see the Pistons ranked eight-worst in the league, scoring just 108.4 points per game while shooting 42.9 percent from the field, the second-worst rate in the NBA. Compounding the problem is unlike, say, the New York Knicks, who can’t score but are great defensively and crash the boards Detroit can’t defend or rebound either. The Pistons are in the bottom ten of the league in points allowed and are the fifth-worst team pulling down just 43 boards a night. They must be missing league-leading rebounder Andre Drummond, who they traded to the Cavaliers last February, right about now.
Denver has a player that can rebound, pass and score. The Nuggets unicorn, Nikola Jokic, is having an MVP type season. The seven-footer is putting up nearly 12 boards a game and is a league top-ten scorer averaging almost 27 a night. But perhaps most impressive has been his passing. The number one player in fantasy basketball is putting up an unheard of near nine assists per game. That’s just a ridiculous number for a center, so ridiculous he’s averaging more helpers than any other man in the middle in the history of the game. For much of the season, Jokic was leading the league, putting up as many as 13 assists per game at one point.
Jokic comes into this one after leading the Nuggets to perhaps their biggest win of the year. The big Serbian tied a career-high with 47-points taking out the league’s best team and ending their NBA season-high 11-game win streak. Denver convincingly took out the Jazz 128-117 on Sunday to pull within three games of Utah for the Northwest Division lead. The Nuggets have now won six of their past seven and are a season-best four games over .500.
The over has been the play in seven of the Pistons past eight as a road dog, while the Nuggets have gone above in their past six games after putting up 125-plus points. Detroit has failed to cover in their past four road games while Denver is 6-0 against the spread after allowing 100 points in a game.
