Indiana Pacers vs. New Orleans Pelicans News and Notes
A pair of teams coming in at opposite ends of the spectrum hook up in New Orleans Monday night. Indiana has lost two of their past three while the Pelicans have won two in a row, including a second victory over Toronto, when they came back in the fourth quarter.
Brandon Ingram continues to shine for New Orleans, scoring 31 against the Raptors to up his team-leading average to 24 points per game. Outside of Ingram and Zion Williamson’s near 20 points a game, the Pelicans have struggled to score. Ingram and Zion are the team’s only two players putting up more than 13 points per game, leading to the Pels being the league’s 26th ranked offense.
With low scoring comes lots of missed shots, which leads to an opportunity on the glass. The Pels have certainly done that with four players grabbing at least seven boards in the win over Toronto. New Orleans is the third-best rebounding team in the NBA, pulling down almost 49 rebounds per game. The strong rebounding lends itself to their excellent defense.
Despite allowing Toronto to score 116 on Saturday, the Pelicans are still allowing the NBA’s third-fewest points. New Orleans is giving up just 102 points per game on the fourth-best opposing field goal percentage of 43.1 percent.
The Pacers and their second-highest field goal percentage of nearly 50 percent will put the Pelicans defense to the test on Monday. Indiana is also the ninth-highest scoring team this season, putting up 114 points per game. The Pacers are getting it done as a unit with six players scoring in double-figures, including three averaging 20 or better. Despite the balanced attack, one player has stood out above the rest.
Domantas Sabonis is having an unreal start. The Pacers big man leads the team with 11.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game while also the team’s second-leading scorer. Sabonis put up his sixth straight double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in Saturday’s loss to the Knicks.
The play of guard Victor Oladipo, coming off a ruptured quadriceps tendon that limited him to 13 games last season, has been welcomed as well. Oldadipo is leading the team nailing three triples per game while putting up 20 points, 4.4 assists, and 5.6 rebounds a night to fill out the stat sheet nicely.
Malcolm Brogdon has also been a key cog in the wheel for the Pacers. In his second season with the team after coming over from Milwaukee, Brogdon leads Indiana in scoring, putting up 22.2 points per game while adding 6.3 assists.
The Pacers have covered in four of six games this season, while New Orleans has covered two-straight games. Points have been a premium as the Pelicans have gone under in every game but one while Indiana has gone below in three of the past four.
New Orleans has had Indiana’s number, at least in the wagerist’s world. The Pelicans have covered eight of their past nine games with the Pacers going back to 2016. The over has been the play in four of the past six head-to-head meetings between these two squads.
