Indiana Pacers vs. Washington Wizards News and Notes
The Pacers and Wizards meet for the first of two games before the regular season ends and could see each other for the third time in just over two weeks.
Indiana sits in the ninth seed while Washington is 2.5 games back of the Pacers in tenth. If the play-in round were to start today, they would meet in an elimination game, with the winner having a chance to take another play-in game to get themselves a playoff round.
The Wizards have been playing their best basketball of the season after a terrible first half of the year. Washington has won ten of 12 and is no longer a doormat in the East. The fifth highest-scoring team in the league is coming off a heartbreaker of a loss on Saturday where Mr. Triple Double was out triple-doubled by a Maverick.
Luka Doncic led Dallas to a one-point win over the Wiz with a triple-double that would make even Wizards’ guard Russell Westbrook jealous. Doncic put up 31 points, a career-best 20 assists, and 12 boards. Westbrook, who leads the NBA with 31 trip-dubs, came up just short of 32 with a game-high 42 points, ten boards, and nine assists.
The league’s second-leading scorer, Bradley Beal, put up 29 points but missed a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 2.6 seconds to go. Beal, Westbrook, and the Wizards will try and get back on track against a team that just welcomed back their franchise player with a triple-double.
Domantas Sabonis returned from a six-game absence because of back issues and one-upped Westbrook and Doncic in the process. Sabonis had his triple-double in the first half and finished with 26 points, 19 rebounds, and a career-best 14 assists.
His career game led Indiana to a franchise-record 152 points, and their 57-point win in Oklahoma City was the largest margin of victory by a road team in NBA history.
Doug McDermott had a game-high 31 points for the Pacers, while Caris LeVert scored 25 points in the record-setting victory.
The Pacers will have to try and keep the road success going without the NBA’s shot block leader. Myles Turner will miss his eighth straight game as he and TJ Warren are out indefinitely.
Injury-plagued Indiana was also without Goga Bitadze, Jeremy Lamb, and JaKarr Simpson against the Thunder, with all three men expected to miss Monday’s game. Team-leading scorer Malcolm Brogdon also missed Saturday’s game and is questionable with a hamstring issue.
The Wizards have covered seven of eight as a favorite and 4-0 against the spread following a loss. Indiana has met the spread in five of six road games and gone over in four straight overall. Washington went high in seven straight against teams with a losing record. The Pacers have covered five of seven meetings with the Wizards and 11 of 15 in the nation’s capital.
