Los Angeles Clippers vs. Miami Heat News and Notes
A pair of short-handed teams affected by COVID-19 and injuries will hook up in South Beach on Thursday night. Both the Clippers and Heat have seen key players miss time following the league’s health and safety protocols, but Miami has been hit hardest. The team’s top-player hasn’t seen the court in three weeks. Jimmy Butler last played in a win against the Wizards on January 9th when he was just one assist away from a triple-double. Butler has now missed nine-straight games, along with a postponed game against Boston on the 10th. Miami has dropped seven of those nine contests and come in having lost four in a row. Butler was with the team for last night’s loss against the Nuggets, although not dressed on the bench. There’s an outside shot he plays against LA on Thursday.
Butler hasn’t been the only player to miss time for Miami. Bam Adebayo, Goran Dragic, who missed Wednesday’s game, Kendrick Nunn, Moe Harkless, Udonis Haslem, KZ Okpala, and Avery Bradley, who returned Wednesday, have all missed chunks of time because of COVID contact tracing. In addition to those affected by the coronavirus, Miami has also been without Tyler Herro for the past seven games with a neck injury. Herro was a game-time decision on Wednesday, so there’s hope he can suit up against LA. To say Miami has been decimated would be an enormous understatement.
Now the Clippers are starting to experience what the Heat already has. LA found out Monday superstars and the core of the team Kawhi Leonard and Paul George will miss about a week due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols. That’s a massive loss for the Clippers as Kawhi (25.9) and George (23.9) were 1-2 in points, assists with Leonard dishing out 5.7 and Paul 5.4 per game, as well as steals. The news gets even worse as starting point guard Patrick Beverley is also out with a knee injury. That’s 60 percent of their first line out and definitely their top two players, arguably top three contributors.
The first test for the decimated Clippers did not go well. LA fell 108-99 to the Hawks on Tuesday, failing to break 100 for just the second time this season. Just one player from the starting lineup reached 20 points as Reggie Jackson led the team in scoring. The lineup card read like a mystery with names like Terance Mann and Amir Coffey featured. Even Jackson hasn’t logged 20 minutes of court time in a month before Tuesday’s Atlanta loss. The rag-tag bunch will try and pull it together without Kawhi, George, and Beverley and take advantage of the short-handed Heat on a back-to-back.
LA has covered in six of their past seven trips to Miami while covering three-straight meetings with the Heat. After going over in the past two sessions, these two teams played to the under in eight straight head-to-head matchups. The Heat have covered just once in their past four and LA four of their past six overall.
