Los Angeles Lakers vs. Detroit Pistons News and Notes
The Pacific Division-leading Lakers, just half a game back of the league’s best mark, come into Detroit to meet a team with pretty much their reverse record. At 14-5, LA is worlds apart from the 4-14 Pistons, who are right back at it after losing for the fifth time in six games. Detroit dropped a 122-107 decision visiting the Cavaliers last night and is now forced to face the mightly Lakers on the wrong end of a back-to-back Wednesday night with some travel in the mix.
It was the sixth time this month Detroit allowed 120 points or more, which makes their eighth-worst NBA defense not all that surprising. The Pistons are allowing almost 114 points a game and the league’s third-highest opposing field goal percentage. Detroit’s swiss cheese defense was on full display Wednesday night, allowing the Cavs to shoot 54 percent from the field and a ridiculous 52.4 percent from beyond the arc. Just to get an idea how bad that is, the league’s top team shoots nearly 12 percent lower than Clevelands rate from three-point land against Detroit last night.
League-leading rebounder Andre Drummond pulling down 16 boards to go toward his NBA-best 14.7 per game didn’t really help the cause. Neither did team-leading scorer Jerami Grant scoring a team-high 26 against the Cavs. The end result was the same, and the Motor City squad has now seen the wrong end of victory ten out of their past 13 games.
The Lakers are on the opposite trajectory as their Wednesday opponent. LA comes in winners of three of their past four after a heartbreaking one-point loss to the 76ers last night. Tobias Harris nailed a 15-footer with three seconds left on the clock, which Anthony Davis couldn’t answer from 36 feet away as time expired.
LeBron James’ game-high 34-points went to waste as the Lakers were bested by Joel Embiid, who scored a team-high 28. Philly actually had four starters score 14-plus points, which contrasted first-teamers Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Marc Gasol combing for 11 points for LA. The Lakers bench didn’t chip in much either. Montrezl Harrell, one of the best sixth men in the game, was held to zero points for the first time in four years in the loss.
Before that speed bump, the Lakers were rolling. They had won three straight, seven of eight and 11 of 13 in January. While LA can score, they’ve really been doing it with defense. The Lakers are second in the NBA, allowing just 104.6 points per game with the sixth-best opposing field goal percentage. LA also allows the fewest triples in the league at just over ten a night. Six times this month, the purple and gold have held opponents to 100 points or fewer.
Being the second-leg of a back-to-back, make sure you check the injury report closer to tip-off. LeBron and AD will likely be listed on the IR, which has been usual practice this season, although LBJ has yet to miss a game while Davis has just missed two so far this year. Blake Griffin sat out the first leg for Detroit against Cleveland and should suit up against the Lakers after the day of rest.
The under has been the play in 11 of the last 13 games Los Angeles was a road favorite while the Pistons have gone under in their past six against favorites. Surprisingly LA has had some problems with Motor City lately. The Lakers have failed to cover in four trips to Detroit and have beat the spread just twice in their past eight against the Pistons overall.
