MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES VS. MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES NEWS AND NOTES
These two teams met on Wednesday, and the Grizzlies were able to secure a comfortable 11-point win. That said, these two teams could look a bit different on Friday.
On the Grizzlies side, Ja Morant has been upgraded to questionable after missing the previous eight games with an ankle injury. It’s impossible to understate how big of an addition that would be for their offense. The Grizzlies have been putrid on that side of the ball since Morant got hurt, averaging just 105.3 points per 100 possessions over their past eight games. That would be the third-worst mark in the league over the course of the full season.
Unsurprisingly, the Grizzlies offense has been vastly improved with Morant on the floor. He’s played just 81 minutes so far this season, but the Grizzlies have increased their Offensive Efficiency by +16.3 points per 100 possessions and their Effective FG% by +5.7% over that time frame. The Grizzlies are slightly worse on the defensive end with Morant on the court, but they’ve still increased their Net Rating by +11.4 points per 100 possessions. He will give them a huge boost if he’s able to suit up.
On the other side, the Timberwolves will be without two key rotation players today. Juancho Hernangomez and Ricky Rubio have both been ruled out, and they have carried sizable workloads for the Timberwolves this season. Both players also own positive Net Rating differentials – meaning the team is better with them on the court than off the court – so those will be tough minutes to make up.
The Timberwolves have gotten a bit healthier recently with Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Okogie rejoining the rotation, but the rest of the roster is still pretty pedestrian. D’Angelo Russell in particular has been a major disappointment this season, and the Timberwolves are giving up more than 20 additional points per 100 possessions on the defensive end with him on the court. His 346 minutes this season are the second-highest mark on the team, so that is obviously an issue.
If Morant is back in the lineup, he should give the Grizzlies enough scoring to propel this team to victory.
