Miami Heat vs. Oklahoma City Thunder News and Notes
The Miami Heat will try to wrap up a franchise-tying long road trip with a winning record when they conclude their seven-game, 12-day journey in Oklahoma City. Miami has won two straight after getting off to a tough 1-3 start to their trek, with the most recent victory coming Saturday in LA. The Heat took advantage of an injury-ravaged Lakers team without starters Anthony Davis and Dennis Schroder to pick up the 96-94 win. Miami’s seventh-ranked defense was on full display, holding LeBron James to just 19 points on 33 percent shooting. While they held the King to 1-for-8 from behind the arc, the league’s top defense in the paint also defended the key very well.
On the offensive end, Kendrick Nunn continued his strong play with a game-high 27 while Jimmy Butler put up 24 points. Butler came up short in his bid for a fourth-straight triple-double but did add eight rebounds, five assists, and a pair of steals in the victory. The win was Miami’s sixth in their past nine games and is the start of a turnaround from a 7-14 start fuelled by COVID-related absences and injuries. Goran Dragic remains out with ankle issues, while Tyler Herro is questionable after missing the second half of Saturday’s win with a hip injury. Despite the rocky first half of the season, Miami finds themselves just 1.5 games out of a playoff spot.
While the Oklahoma City Thunder’s record is just a game back of Miami, their path to the playoffs looks much more unlikely. OKC is four games back of a postseason berth with four teams in front of them. The Thunder are coming in losers of six of eight but did pull off their first win in a week with a victory over the Cavaliers on Sunday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put up a game-high 31 to lead the six Thunder players in double-figure scoring in the 117-101 win over a plummetting Cleveland team. Gilgeous-Alexander’s third game back was his best since returning from missing four with a knee issue. The team leading scorer at 22.5 a night put up 22 and 14 in his two previous games and will have his work cut out for him against Miami’s stingy defense.
The Heat have gone under in their past four following a win and five of their past six after a cover. Oklahoma has gone below the number in five of six and covered just once in their past four. Miami has covered in three of four against the Thunder, including a 118-90 win this season, while the over has come through in four of their past five head-to-head meetings.
