Miami Heat vs. Toronto Raptors News and Notes
A pair of underachieving teams many thought would battle atop the Eastern Conference standings hook up in the Raptors’ adopted “home,” Tampa, Florida, Wednesday night. A game that feels more like a Miami home game just 280 miles north of their South Florida domain will feature two teams still battling to reach .500.
Toronto has played much better lately after a horrific 1-6, then 2-8 start. The Raptors have won three straight at home after playing seven of their first ten on the road, the actual road away from their temporary homecourt in Tampa. Toronto swept two games with Charlotte before an impressive win over Luka Doncic and the Mavericks on Monday. Despite Luka’s triple-double of 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists and Kristaps Porzingis scoring 23, Toronto was able to shut out Dallas’ supporting cast to get the 116-93 win. The Raps were able to hold the rest of the Mavs to just 34 points, who were shorthanded with four regulars still on the NBA’s health and safety protocol list.
It will be two games in a row the Raptors face a team dealing with the effects of COVID. Both Jimmy Butler and Avery Bradley will miss their fourth straight game on the covid-protocols list, while Meyers Leonard did not travel with the team dealing with a shoulder injury. Tyler Herro has also missed the team’s past two games with a neck injury and is questionable for this one.
The Heat have been able to get Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo back for their past two after missing two on the health and safety list. Both men had an impact getting Miami just their first win in four games when they took out the Pistons on Monday. Adebayo led the way, putting up game-highs with 28 points and 11 boards, while Dragic was the Heat’s second-leading scorer, banking 22 in the 113-107 win.
Toronto has been getting outstanding play from a bit of an unexpected source. Chris Boucher has put up four-straight games of 20-plus points while shooting a ridiculous 66 percent from the field in that span. Pascal Siakam has turned things around a bit after a terrible start. Siakam has scored at least 15 points in seven of his past 18 while averaging right around 20 points per game over that stretch. The backcourt has been solid all year. Kyle Lowry leads the team with 19.1 points and 7.1 assists per game, while Fred VanVleet is right behind him, second on the team in both categories scoring 19.0 a game while dishing out 6.3 dimes.
Miami has hit the over in five straight while the Raptors have gone above the number in two of three games. Neither team has been very good against the spread. The Heat have covered in just once in their past six while Toronto has met the spread in just three of nine. Miami has had Toronto’s number a little bit going head-to-head. The Heat have covered in seven of their past ten games against the Dinos while they’ve played to the over in seven of their past nine matchups. Toronto could be a better play on the moneyline, winning five of their past seven games against Miami.
