MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES VS. LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS NEWS AND NOTES
Expect the Clippers to come in angry and fired up on Tuesday night for their home date with the Timberwolves. LA is coming off their worst defeat in franchise history. Dallas embarrassed the Clippers on Sunday, dismantling LA from start to finish. When the smoke cleared, Paul George and friends were looking at a 124-73 defeat and on their homecourt no less.
The loss strengthens the argument on the value of Kawhi Leonard. After Leonard led the Clip to a 2-0 start, he couldn’t suit up Sunday nursing a banged-up knee. Kawhi is averaging 23.5 points per game to go along with six steals in his first two games. It’s hard to imagine the defensive-minded Leonard allows such a demoralizing beatdown when he’s on the court. When he is on the court remains a question. The Clippers are on the first leg of a back-to-back Tuesday, and Leonard is still nursing his knee issue. The former Raptor will be a game-time decision against Minnesota.
If Leonard doesn’t suit up, Paul George will have to pick up the slack. Something he didn’t really do in the blowout loss. George scored 15 on 4 of 13 shooting while missing all six of his 3-point attempts against Dallas. He will have to do much better against Minnesota if Leonard sits. Luke Kennard will again get the start should Kawhi remain out. Marcus Morris will be out again and is still waiting to make his season debut.
The Timberwolves have injury problems of their own. Minnesota’s main man in the middle, Karl-Anthony Towns, sprained his left wrist during the Wolves win over Utah on Boxing Day. Like Leonard, Towns led his team to a 2-0 start before the Lakers blew them out without him. The 2015 first overall pick will be evaluated week-to-week and could miss a number of games.
With their number one option out, the T’Wolves will scramble to find offense. Already ranked 27th in the NBA, putting up 106 points per game, Minnesota will need a concentrated team effort to score consistently.
Malik Beasley, Anthony Edwards, and D’Angelo Russell should lead the attack, while Ed Davis and Naz Reid will fight it out for the missing minutes left by Towns at the center spot.
Both teams have covered in two of their first three games, while Minnesota has gone under in every one and the Clippers over in two of three. In fact, the Wolves have hit the under in their past five games and seven of the last nine. LA has covered in three of the past four meetings with Minnesota.
