Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Portland Trail Blazers News and Notes
The Timberwolves are reeling. After starting the season 2-0, Minnesota has now dropped five in a row, including a loss to Washington to give them their first victory of the year. It’s no coincidence the T’Wolves’ losing streak went hand-in-hand with the health of their superstar center. Karl-Anthony Towns went down with a dislocated left wrist following the team’s second game of the season, and Minnesota has not won since. It won’t get any easier trying to succeed in a place they haven’t been able to since 2016. Minny has dropped their past seven games in Portland.
The Wolves are putting up just 105 points a game since their court-leader went down, an average that would put them fourth-worst in the league. Even with their 107.6 points per game on the season, Minnesota is ranked just 22nd in league scoring. They are certainly missing Towns, who scored a career-high 26 points per game last year. The Timberwolves don’t have a 20-point scorer on the team and have just three players outside of Towns scoring more than 10 points a night. To say Minnesota is offensively challenged, especially without their big man, would be a massive understatement.
Minny is also one of the worst teams in the league on the defensive end. The Wolves are allowing 120 points per game, third-worst in the league, while letting opponents shoot over 50 percent from the field, a number putting them 29th in the NBA.
Portland has also struggled to defend this season, a major factor why they come in after dropping two in a row to sub-par teams. The Blazers blew a sizeable halftime lead by allowing Chicago to score 66 second-half points on Tuesday. Just two days earlier, Portland allowed Golden State to drop 137 points on them in a 15-point loss to the Warriors.
A pair of subpar performances now have the Trail Blazers ranked 25th in the league allowing 118 points per game. Portland’s 47.7 percent shooting allowed from the field is seventh-worst in the NBA, while they are also allowing the seventh most free throws in the league.
The Blazers have proven they can score with their top-ten offense being powered by their backcourt duo’s outstanding play. CJ McCollum leads the team scoring 27.7 points per game, which puts him fifth in the league in scoring. Point guard Damian Lillard is right behind his teammate, scoring 26 a game for the tenth highest average in the NBA. Much of the combo’s damage comes from beyond the arc as McCollum leads the league hitting 4.9 three-pointers per game, almost a full three-ball better than any other player, while Lillard ranks sixth, nailing 3.7 triples a night. The perimeter playing pair is accounting for nearly half of Portland’s offense.
Minnesota has covered just once in their past five games, while the Blazers have beat the spread only once in their past four. It’s been a tale of two seasons for the Wolves on the total as Minny has gone over in their past three after starting the season with four-straight unders. Portland has flip-flopped under and over in each game this season, and if you’re keeping score of that trend, they hit the under in Tuesday’s loss to the Bulls.
The under has been the play in recent head-to-head meetings between the Blazers and T’Wolves. Since March 2018, this pair has played to the under in six of their seven meetings.
