New Orleans Pelicans vs. Utah Jazz Predictions and Picks
The Pelicans are off to a 5-8 start this season, and much of that has to do with the fact that they’re simply a below-average team across the board. Per TeamRankings, New Orleans is 19th in the league in offensive efficiency (1.057), 21st in defensive efficiency (1.078), and 29th in three-point shots made per game (9.8). This team lacks an identity, and they should not be trusted at the betting window, particularly against a quality opponent like the Utah Jazz.
Utah is one of the best defensive teams in the league — holding opponents to just 105.1 points per game. They’re not too bad putting the ball in the basket either, as the Jazz are seventh in the league in offensive efficiency (1.096).
Both teams faced one another just two nights ago, and the Jazz prevailed 118-102 and handed the Pelicans’ their sixth loss in seven games.
In doing some research, I found that New Orleans struggles early in games as an underdog as they’re just 1-6 ATS in the first half this season. Contrast that with the Jazz, who are 9-5 ATS with a 25.7% ROI in the first half. In fact, Utah is actually on a 6-1 ATS run in the first half.
I think both trends are something to keep in mind as the season wears on.
Consider laying the points with the Jazz to cover the first half number as a 3.5-point favorite.
The Pick: Jazz 1H -3.5
