New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics News and Notes
A renewing of one of the oldest and best rivalries in the East goes down at the Garden in Boston on Wednesday night. The Knicks and Celtics are fighting tooth and nail for positioning to secure at least a play-in spot in the Eastern Conference. Both teams come into this one with a 25-26 record on the year, holding down the seventh and eighth seeds, which, remember, don’t guarantee a playoff series. The seven through ten seeds will have a play-in game to determine who moves on to a first-round playoff series. Both teams are a game back of the Miami Heat for the sixth and final guaranteed playoff spot.
Neither team has been playing exceptionally well lately. Boston comes in losers of three of five after dropping a ten-point game to the Sixers on their home court on Tuesday night. The Celtics had no answer for Joel Embiid, who torched Boston for a game-high 35 points and struggled on the offensive end, being held under 100 with no player scoring more than 20 points.
Boston will try to get back on track with a short-handed squad on the second night of a back-to-back. The Celts have been affected by COVID continuously this season as Evan Fournier is out after again landing in health and safety protocols. Tristan Thompson has also missed 12 games on the COVID-list, although he may return Wednesday. Even if he does play against the Knicks, he’ll likely be on a severe minutes restriction. Don’t forget they were also without superstar Jayson Tatum for weeks with Covid earlier this season.
New York has dropped four of five games after blowing a golden opportunity against an under-manned Brooklyn Nets squad on Monday. The Knicks had a 14-point lead against a Brooklyn team without Kevin Durant and James Harden, who left in the first quarter with a recurring hamstring issue. They did have Kyrie Irving, however, who went on to drop a game-high 40 points. RJ Barrett led the Knicks with 22 while Reggie Bullock chipped in 21 points. Julius Randle had a huge game, putting up his fourth triple-double of the season. Randle had 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists but will likely remember missing the game-tying jumper at the buzzer as New York went down 112-110.
While no one really expected the Knicks to be in the playoff picture, here they are and are looking for their first playoff berth since 2013. They already have won more games than either of the previous two seasons, and while playing with house money, you can bet they desperately want to extend their season. The Brooklyn loss is a tough one as New York was in a great position to knock off the shorthanded Nets. You can bet Randle was kicking himself as the Knicks big man said, “There are not really any moral victories” after the loss. Expect New York to come out fired up on Wednesday night.
The Knicks have covered six of seven road games, while Boston has covered in just two of their past five home games. New York hit the under in five of six following a cover, while the Celtics have gone below the number in six straight. The under has also come through in four of five head-to-head meetings and seven of ten matchups in Boston.
