New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics Moneyline News and Notes
This matchup pits two teams with opposite outcomes for their last five games. The Knicks are on a five-game losing streak, with losses against Oklahoma City, Denver, Charlotte, Brooklyn and Cleveland. The Celtics, on the other hand, have won their last five games, with wins against Orlando, Washington, Miami, Toronto and Detroit, and have a limited rotation due to the residual effects of the team having players on the league’s health and safety protocol.
Using a solidified rotation of Julius Randle, Reggie Bullock, Mitchell Robinson, Elfrid Payton and RJ Barret continue to play minutes in the 30s. Look for rookie Immanuel Quickley to see significant minutes off the bench and split time with Payton. In the 106-103 loss to the Cavaliers Friday, Quickley played 28 minutes, scoring 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. He was only behind Julius Randle, who scored 28 points.
This season, the Knicks are playing at the slowest pace in the league, averaging 96.3 possessions per game, scoring the second-least points per game at 101 and allow 106 points to opposing teams.
The Celtics will be without Jayson Tatum, who is still self-isolating under the league’s health and safety protocol. With Tatum out, look for Jaylen Brown to continue to be the dominant piece in the Celtics production. In the first game, after a week-long absence from the court due to health and safety protocol, Brown played 25 minutes, scoring 21 points, two rebounds and eight assists.
Kemba Walker is near return and is listed as questionable for Sunday. If Kemba is available Sunday, he will make his season debut, missing the first 11 games with a knee injury and likely to be on a minutes limit. If Walker remains out, look for Marcus Smart to see increased production and Payton Pritchard to see additional minutes.
The Celtics this season are playing a league-average pace, with 100 possession per game, and rank in the top-10 in the league in scoring, averaging 114 points per game.
New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics Moneyline Predictions and Picks
The SportsGrid Betting Model leans toward the Boston Celtics, giving them a 53% chance to win. With both teams playing at a slower pace, the model projects the game total at 210.3 and trends toward the under.
Last season, in the 31 games Boston was favored at home, they posted a 23-8 record and covered 15 times. They scored 116.6 points per game in that stretch while playing at a league-average 99.5 possessions per game pace.
The Knicks, when a road underdog of 7.5-points or more, posted a 6-21 record last season, covering 13 times. In those 27 games, they allowed 116 points to opposing teams and ranked 20th in pace, an average of 99.3 possessions per game.
Look for the Celtics to continue their winning streak, with continued production from Brown and Smart in what looks to be a slower-paced matchup.
