New York Knicks vs. Chicago Bulls News and Notes
Two once-proud franchises hook up in Chicago as a pair of teams very far from their glory days. The Knicks and Bulls were once a marquee attraction when Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing would battle each other in the Eastern Conference Finals. While each franchise has had glimpses since those 90s teams were the last time Chicago and New York were both relevant at the same time. Now they meet in the first leg of a two-game set as a pair of squads on the wrong side of .500 and a playoff spot.
After showing patches of improvements, the Knicks have become, well, the Knicks again this season, coming in losers of four of their past five games. Most recently, New York was stunned by a 14-point loss to the Pacific Division-leading Clippers on Sunday night. Kawhi Leonard led six scorers reaching double-digits with a game-high 28 points to down the Knicks 129-115 for the road victory. The ordinarily defensive-minded New York team, who allow the fewest points in the league, ended the month in unstylish fashion giving up the most points they’ve allowed all season.
A few bright spots for the Knicks were Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley. Randle led the team with 27 points and 12 boards, while Barrett chipped in with 23 and a pair of steals. Quickley continued to speed up the pace (see what I did there) off the bench putting up 25, his third game in the past four scoring at least 25.
Chicago hasn’t been any better than their Eastern Conference rivals of late as the Bulls have dropped three in a row and seven of their past ten. In classic bad team manner, the Bulls have shown zero consistency this season and have been one of the league’s streakiest teams. The Bulls started the year on a three-game losing streak followed by a modest two-game winner, throw a loss in there, win two more in a row, then another losing streak of four games followed by a three-game heater, and finally their third losing streak of three games or more this season. Add it all up, and a 7-11 record is what you get.
The Bulls’ most recent streak comes with all three losses coming at home, albeit to outstanding teams in the Lakers, Celtics, and most recently a heartbreaking one-point loss to the Trail Blazers on Saturday. Damian Lillard made his 42nd, 43rd, and 44th points the most important of the night, hitting a near buzzer-beating three leaving just 0.3 seconds on the clock erasing Chicago’s fourth-quarter comeback.
Lauri Markkanen had his best game of the year in the loss, putting up a season-high 31 points. Markkanen added six boards while hitting six triples on the night. Team-leading scorer but up 26, just a shade under his season average of 26.9, while Colby White chipped in with 20.
The Bulls continue to play the take two punches to throw one kind of game. Chicago can score with the best of them, putting up 115 a game, fifth-most in the NBA but also allow a ton of points. The Bulls rank 28th in the NBA, giving up 118.5 per contest.
Chicago is 9-1 against the spread playing on one day’s rest while the Knicks have covered six of their past seven Monday games. New York has covered in four of their past five against the Bulls, while the over has been the play in their past two and four of their past six head-to-head meetings.
