New York Knicks vs. Golden State Warriors News and Notes
It’s safe to say both the Warriors and Knicks are exceeding expectations. Both clubs are sitting around .500 after neither team had much hope of being competitive this year. New York is still rebuilding while injuries have decimated the Warriors. There now has to be some hope for the future for both franchises.
New York comes in off of two impressive victories, first beating the Celtics in Boston before downing the Magic at MSG. Before that, the Knicks had lost five straight after starting the season looking very good. It’s been a bit of a mixed back for New York, but one constant has been their defense.
New York has been one of the best defensive teams in the league most of the season. The Knicks are giving up a league-low 102.7 points per game, nearly three points better than any other group. They are also holding teams to league lows with 43.3 percent shooting from the floor and 31 percent from behind the arc. While their perimeter defense has been fantastic, they can also defend inside as New York ranks around the top-ten with over five blocks a night.
The offense has been another story. The Knicks are dead-last in team scoring, putting up just over 100 points per game. They are also nearly three points ahead or behind any other NBA team in that category. New York has hit the fewest three-pointers in the league and is second-worst, dishing out just 21 assists per game.
Golden State is the polar opposite of the Knickerbockers. The Warriors can score and can’t really defend. GS is still the eighth-worst defending team after a stretch of improvements on the defensive end but continues to give up 114 a game. The Warriors were able to hold San Antonio to under 100 points in a big win on Wednesday before limiting the mightly Lakers to 113 in a two-point win in LA on Monday.
The northern California club has seen their offensive number dip a little bit over the past two weeks but still rank 12th, scoring over 112 points a game. That offense was on display in their past two games, both wins as the Warriors but up 115 and 121 points in their last pair of victories. As expected, Steph Curry has been leading the way, scoring game-highs of 26 points against both LA and the Spurs. Curry ranks third in the NBA, putting up over 28 a night. The Warriors sharp-shooter has really put G-State on his back as the team has just one other player scoring more than 12 points a game in Andrew Wiggins, putting up 17.8 a night.
Oakland’s team will be put to the test playing on a back-to-back after defeating San Antonio last night, while the Knicks come in well-rested after playing last on Monday when they dropped the Magic 91-84. Not only does New York come in rested, but they welcome back a key player who hasn’t been in the lineup since the third game of the season.
Alec Burks has missed the team’s last 12 games with a sprained left ankle after bolting out of the gates for the Knicks. The man who actually played with the Warriors last season put up games of 22, 22, and 18, in a game he only played 20 minutes for New York’s first win of the season as they downed the Bucks. Burks will provide some much-needed scoring to the Knicks anemic offense.
The under looks like a good play here. New York games have gone under following the last six Knicks wins, and past nine of ten games, they were an underdog. The same trend rings true for the Warriors as GS has gone under in their past four following a win, past five home games, and six of their past seven games overall. New York has covered in two straight after failing to cover in five straight, while the Warriors have covered in two straight, four of six, and six of their past nine games.
