New York Knicks vs. Indiana Pacers News and Notes
A pair of new head coaches will go head-to-head in Indiana as the Pacers debut Nate Bjorkgren while New York’s new head honcho Tom Thibodeau will be behind the Knicks bench.
Indiana starts the season as healthy as they’ve been in a while. Victor Oladipo was limited to just 19 games last season because of a quad injury after missing 46 games the year before. The Pacers point guard led the team scoring 23.1 points per game in his first and only full season with the club in 2018.
Domantas Sabonis will also come into his fifth season, all healed up and ready to go. The versatile big man is coming off a career-year where he averaged personal bests scoring 18.5 points and 12.4 rebounds per game despite being limited to 62 games. Sabonis dealt with plantar fasciitis in his left foot late last season.
Despite their overall health, the Pacers do come in with a few players walking wounded. TJ Warren is also dealing with plantar fasciitis but is expected to play. Myles Turner has cleared concussion protocol and will play against the Knicks.
New York comes in different yet the same. The new; they’ve made several additions, including Alec Burks, Nerlens Noel, and Austin Rivers. The old; they will again be an awful ball club. Despite their dire season outlook, the Knicks do have some bright spots to look forward to.
RJ Barrett should continue to grow as a player and build on a rookie campaign he averaged almost 15 points per game. An up and coming seven-footer joins the 20-year-old guard in the starting lineup. Coming into his third season, Mitchell Robinson is expected to have a breakout year. The 22-year-old led the league with a .742 field goal percentage and was tied for fifth with two blocks per game last season. The Knicks are the second-youngest team in the league, with an average age of 24.3. While they’ll have growing pains, they could be entertaining to watch.
One of their not so young players at a decrepit 28, Austin Rivers will not make his team debut against the Pacers as he’s dealing with a groin injury. Robinson is dealing with a slightly sprained ankle but is expected to start in the middle for the Knicks road opener.
