Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Miami Heat News and Notes
One team overachieving, one underachieving, will meet in Miami on Monday night. Yes, these teams have the same record of 2-3, but the Eastern Conference Champion Heat were expected to get faster out of the gates while the Thunder have to be happy winning two of their first five games as most thought they’d be the worst team in the NBA this season.
Miami will look to start to the right the ship coming in off a 10-point loss to the Mavericks on New Year’s Day. The Heat scored a season-low 83 points in the defeat and now find themselves ranked 28th in league scoring. Miami has also struggled on the glass as their 40 boards per game ranks them dead last in the NBA this year.
The Heat will have to get Jimmy Butler going. Their team leader has really struggled out of the gates as he’s dealing with a nagging ankle injury. Butler is scoring just eight points per game while shooting 32 percent from the field. Far cries from his 23 points per game in the playoffs and near 20 in last year’s regular season. Butler is also a career 45 percent shooter.
Bam Abedayo has been picking up the slack for his ailing teammate. Abedayo leads the Heat with 19 points and eight boards a game. Goran Dragic and Tyler Herro are also chipping in as both are putting up more than 15 points a night.
The Thunder have somehow picked up both their wins on the road against Charlotte and Orlando. Maybe more surprising than the wins away from home is how Oklahoma City is winning while not really doing anything particularly well.
OKC ranks third-last in team-scoring, putting up just 103 points per game while in the bottom-ten of the league in field goal percentage. They are around the middle of the pack in rebounds, and three-pointers made and rank 24th in 3-point field goal percentage.
On the defensive end, there’s really not a ton to write home about either. They are in the bottom-ten in blocked shots and rank near the middle of the league in points allowed per game.
The Thunder doesn’t have a 20-point scorer on the team as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the team with 18.8 points per game. OKC can boast seven players in double-digit scoring, but that’s more a product of not having a go-to offensive weapon.
These two teams have managed to go under in all four of their most recent meetings while hitting the over in six-straight head-to-head matchups before that. Miami has only covered twice in their past nine games against the Thunder, with those two games coming in their past three meetings.
