Orlando Magic vs. Atlanta Hawks News and Notes
Suddenly, the Atlanta Hawks are one of the hottest teams in the league and get a favorable matchup against perhaps the worst team in the NBA, post-trade deadline.
Atlanta is quietly sneaking up the Eastern Conference standings after winning four of five games, including Sunday’s game with the Pacers. The Hawks spanked Indiana, who are falling fast out of the playoff picture, 129-117 on Sunday. Trae Young led the way with a game-high 34 points while adding 11 assists, while Clint Capela also put up a monstrous double-double with 25 points and 24 rebounds.
Capela also added three blocks in the dominant defensive performance and why he’s not getting more love in the NBA Defensive Player of the Year conversation is beyond logic. Capela leads the league in rebounding and is third in the league with 2.2 blocked shots per game.
It was the Hawks eighth win in their past ten games, and they improved to
17-6 since interim coach Nate McMillan took over to start March. Atlanta is on the verge of their first playoff spot in four years and looks like that sneaky Miami Heat team from last season. They’ll have some serious work to get by the big market, big boys in the East but at +4200 at the FanDuel Sportsbook to win the conference, throwing a few bucks that way could pay out huge.
Atlanta was also strengthened by the return of John Collins, who played his first game since March 30 and scored eight in 21 minutes. The team’s second-leading scorer this season, averaging 18 a game, will be on a minutes restriction but is set to play again tonight against the Magic.
To no one’s surprise, Orlando is heading in the opposite direction of their Southeast division foes. The Magic gutted their team of basically the entire starting lineup at the trade deadline, and the results have reflected such. Orlando flip-flopped Atlanta with a 2-8 record in their past ten, including dropping one of a few winnable games against one of the worst teams in the west, Houston, on Sunday. Wendell Carter, who came back from Chicago for Nikola Vucevic, had 11 points and ten boards for his fourth double-double and has been one of the few bright spots for the Magic.
The other piece that came over from Chicago, Otto Porter Jr., has only played three games for the Magic and remains out on Tuesday night. Orlando fixture Terrence Ross will join him on the sidelines for his second straight DNP with back spasms.
Orlando has covered just once in their past four while the Hawks covered ten of 11 games as a favorite. The over has been the play in the Magic’s past four while Atlanta hit the under in five of six following a win. Orlando has gone 6-2-1 against the spread in nine games against the Hawks. Atlanta won the only head-to-head matchup this season in a 115-112 push.
