ORLANDO MAGIC VS. HOUSTON ROCKETS NEWS AND NOTES
The Magic have been one of the biggest surprises of the early season. They were considered a borderline playoff team in an improved Eastern Conference, but they’ve jumped out to a 6-2 start. They’ve moved to -152 to make the playoffs on FanDuel Sportsbook, so it will be interesting to see if they can keep up this level of play.
Unfortunately, they are going to have to do it without Markelle Fultz. The young PG suffered a torn ACL in their last contest, which means he will face another hurdle early in his career. Fultz was off to his best start as a pro, averaging 14.3 points and 6.1 assists through his first eight games.
Making matters worse, backup PG Michael Carter-Williams has also been ruled out for tonight’s contest vs. the Rockets. Evan Fournier is also listed as questionable, so the Magic could have a deficiency of playmakers on the perimeter.
That said, Houston is dealing with a few key absences of their own. Danuel House has already been ruled out, while Christian Wood is listed as questionable. Wood missed the Rockets’ last game with a knee injury, and he has been an important part of their rotation to start the year. He ranks third on the team in terms of minutes per game, and the Rockets have increased their Net Rating by +5.3 points per 100 possessions with Wood on the floor this season (per Cleaning the Glass).
Despite the fact the Magic are so banged up, our betting model still thinks they deserve to be favored. It projects the Magic to win this game outright approximately 58.5% of the time, so the fact that they’re getting 5.5 points makes this an exploitable betting opportunity.
