Philadelphia 76ers vs. Brooklyn Nets News and Notes
The Philadelphia 76ers have been the class of the league with a sparkling, NBA-best 7-1 record to start the season. Philly will look to extend its best start since 2000-01 when they won their first ten games as they take on a Brooklyn team short one superstar.
Kevin Durant missed the first game of his league-imposed COVID-protocol quarantine on Tuesday night. It didn’t seem to bother the Nets too much, though. Brooklyn dominated the Jazz in a 34-point blowout without KD’s team-leading 28 points per game. Kyrie Irving picked up the slack, dropping a team-high 29, while the Nets had four different starters alongside their point guard.
Jarrett Allen made the most significant impact of the new openers as the big man put up season highs of 19 points and 18 rebounds while collecting a pair of blocks.
The high scoring Nets increased their number three ranked offense with a 130 point against Utah, with much of the minutes coming from the bench in the beatdown. Brooklyn may not have quite as easy a time scoring on defensive stalwarts, Philadelphia.
Philly ranks sixth, allowing just 106 points per game while holding teams to 42.6 percent shooting, the league’s second-lowest opponents’ field goal percentage. Somewhat surprisingly, these very Nets are the only team better than the Sixers holding opposing teams to just 42.1 percent from the floor. Philadelphia also has a top-ten ranking in steals and are in the upper half of the league in blocked shots.
Much of the defensive success comes from Philly’s superstar Joel Embiid. Embiid not only leads the team with 1.9 blocks per game, a number that puts him fifth in the league, but he’s also among the team leaders with 1.3 steals per game. Embiid offers an all-around game as he leads the team in scoring with 25 points and on the glass with 11.7 rebounds per game. Those numbers put the Sixers center around the top-ten in scoring and top-five in rebounding.
Embiid will have to bring his defensive game to stop a Nets superstar who will have the ball in his hands even more now. Irving is sure to get a boost in volume on the offensive side with his scoring partner Durant on the shelf. Kyrie is already the league’s sixth-highest scorer with 27.1 per game and takes the fifth-most shots in the league. His 20 field goal attempts will almost surely go up as he shoulders more of the offensive load.
Brooklyn will undoubtedly be Philly’s biggest test of the season as games against subpar teams Toronto, Cleveland, and two wins over both Charlotte and Washington may have their record somewhat inflated.
The Sixers have covered in four of their past five while Brooklyn has struggled with the spread, covering just once in their past six. Points have been easier for the Nets lately, going over in three of their past four while the defensive-oriented 76ers have gone under in six of eight games this year.
While mostly without Durant and Irving, Philly has dominated the line with Brooklyn recently. The Sixers have covered in seven of the past eight head-to-head meetings with the Nets.
